"What Do You Want To Do Goodness?"
The Many Things I Did Before I Found My Niche (And Why It's Okay to Try)
"So Goodness, what do you want to do with your life?"
My mom asked me, looking at me one afternoon when I returned from another online session.
Honestly, I didn't know what to say. Not then.
But what I had
Curiosity, And vibes of course. But It wasn't enough.
I wanted to do. I wanted to know. I wanted to be something, I just didn't know what exactly. I couldn't name it.
So I started trying everything that even remotely came close to purpose. (Or so I thought)
Let's dive in:⬇️
• Saw an ad for lip gloss on Instagram, spent 5k on the course.
• Learned how to make zobo. Spent another 4k. (Crazy right)
• Please add perfume and soap, 10k.
• Sewing classes attended: 15k. (I stopped because I felt I was doing the wrong thing)
• Bead making was free of charge (God bless the aunty who taught us).
But I spent money buying materials (10k)
• Marketing? Bought the course for 7k.
• Then there's sales and email copywriting: more than 20k.
• I even went to a physical coaching class. 15k
• And I attempted baking at some point as well.
The list goes on.
Total above = 70k
Indeed, I really did try all of that. ????
Let me shock you, I'm not using it to pay my bill, although some paid at some point.
Especially the marketing course.
I was wondering back then whether something was wrong with me. Why couldn't I keep my mind on one thing? Why did my mind travel from business opportunity to arts class? Why did I quickly lose interest? All of that.
I didn't realize it then, but I was looking for my niche, that place where my passion, my expertise, and my voice meet to benefit others.
Looking back, I am proud of that former me.
She wasn't lost. She was finding out.
Curiosity is not a curse. It's a compass.
Trying doesn't render a person unserious. It means you're searching.
And you, a reader, could be there right now.
Maybe you've tried three companies. Maybe you've made five Instagram accounts and erased them all.
Maybe you've made captions that no one enjoyed. Or posted videos that flopped.
You feel like you're screaming into a vacuum.
You have no idea what you're supposed to do.
You don't even know what strengths make you unique.
I've been there. That's why you're here.
You're not learning from someone who nailed it on the first try. You're learning from someone who fell into it through trial and error by listening to the one voice that mattered, my own.
Not the voice of social media trends.
Not what everybody else was doing.
But the voice inside my heart. 🩵
And that is where your niche begins.
Not with another business venture.
Not through a quick hustle.
But with clarity.
A sense of who you are.
Whatever you wish to say.
And who needs to hear you.
